8 - News Report

Lesson 1:
Being Objective

  • News reporters do not express their own opinion and therefore they do not use “I” because a news report is not a personal opinion.
  • News reporters use the third person point of view, which is that of someone outside of the report. This keeps the report objective.

Example

First Person Opinion: My parents do not like the city’s new policy.
Use of personal pronoun “My” indicates a personal opinion, which is inappropriate for a news report.

Third Person Objective: Many parents do not like the city’s new policy.
Use of adjective “Many” makes this a third person point of view. The report is giving the facts instead of an opinion.

Now it’s your turn.

The following quiz will ask you to make a distinction between a personal and an objective point of view.

Now do the quiz, 8.1 Being Objective.
