When writing a summary, you can reduce the number of words in several ways.  These include leaving out nonessential information, using one general word to substitute for several specific words, reducing the number of examples, and leaving out unnecessary words.

How to Make Sentences Shorter

       

1. Find one word that will do the work of several.
  r Cole is a man who had once taught school.
  a Cole is an ex-teacher.
     
  r Dill left the room without a sound
  a Dill left the room silently.
     
2. Generalize rather than list.
  r Nelly bought hamburgers, French fries, and soft drinks.
  a Nelly bought fast food.
     
3. Combine short sentences.
  r Ali delivers newspapers.  He delivers after school.  He does this to earn money.
  a Ali delivers newspapers after school for money

Ali's Newspapers" consists of five sets of sentences that need to be combined.  Each set of sentences can be reduced into one sentence by finding one word to do the work of several, by generalizing, and by combining short sentences. Try combining these sentences on a separate piece of paper then check your answers.

 

Ali’s Newspapers

 

1.   Ali delivers newspapers.

      He delivers after school.

      He does this to earn money.

 

2.   Half of the money is for entertainment.

      Half of the money is for savings.

 

3.   He enjoys playing “Space Raiders.”

      “Space Raiders” is a video game.

      The game is at the arcade.

      The arcade is downtown.

 

 4.  He enjoys going to movies.

      The movies are science fiction.

      He enjoys going with his friend.

      His friend is Jocelyn. 

 

 5.  He goes to the bank.

      He goes once a month.

      He deposits half of his earnings.

 

Ali delivers newspapers after school to earn money.  Half of the money is for entertainment and half is for savings.  He enjoys playing “Space Raiders”, a video game, at the arcade downtown.  He enjoys going to science fiction movies with his friend, Jocelyn.  He goes to the bank once a month and deposits half of his earnings.
