1 - SMART Strategies

S.M.A.R.T. stands for:

  • Summarize as you read
  • Make Inferences & Connections
  • Ask questions
  • Reread if necessary
  • Think about what you already know

These are strategies that all readers use to make sense of what they are reading.  In a classroom, teachers often take students through a series of lessons that guide students to use these strategies.  Unfortunately, you are on your own when writing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test.  You, therefore, have to become an independent reader who uses these reading strategies automatically.

Letís review a few of these strategies and then have you practice bringing it all together.
